pow pockets, ak highlights
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Thursday, May 01, 2008
Despite a ugly north wind, we managed to find some good pockets of snow during the last few days of the trip. Haines delivered the goods this year, we had some down time, and some sick times, but most of all we had some fun.
It was tough as always to pack up and leave Haines. Ak is a magical place and I am thankfull to have ridden there again.
enjoy the photos, a little highlight reel of moments durring the whole trip.

heli wars
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Monday, April 28, 2008
Rarely does the forecast in Alaska predict sunny skies, not to mention
forecasting a week of blue bird, but that is exactly what we saw on the
horizon. Each person slowly confirming with some one else, “did you
check the sat? The Roner forecast looks good. ” The “Roner forecast” is
really just the weatherchannel.com’s super basic prediction, Roner
constantly checked and called out blue holes with amazing accuracy
during the first part of the trip. So we focused now on this becoming a
reality, with only a week left in our trip we needed a break. Sure
Enough just as projected the storm glassed off, moon came out and we
kept our fingers crossed it would be clear in the morning.
To add to the pressure we decided to implement our secret weapon, a
second helicopter with a Tyler mount camera rig shooting super 16. We
had enough budget for three filming days within a 10 day window, and
since we were entering crunch time we decided to bring it in. The Tyler
was mounted into a Jet ranger and flown by Coastal Helicopters top
pilot Jim Wilson, or as CG would exclaim, “OLD MANNNN WILSON!” The
Helicopters only passenger, Todd Jones camera operator extraordinaire.

When its sunny it seems like it will last forever, when its gray it
feels like it will never be sunny again. Day upon day of overcast or
rainy weather forces us to lay low, occupying our time with all sorts
of activities, Indoor exercise, lounging, gaming and cruising around
town. Every thing is in walking distance and there are some great
locations to shoot photos, do interviews, and soak in the AK culture.
With little road access most of Alaska is connected by air, and water
ways, the car is merely a local transport vehicle. The harbor and the
pier have been our favorite places to roast the day away.

break in the weather and got in a few runs this day before a storm set
back in.

In the field

It felt great after warming up for a day, to get out with the TGR crew
here in Haines. Conditions couldn’t be more perfect and the crew is
charging. Dana Flair, Erik Roner, and Seth Morrison are my fellow
riders. The production crew consists of Todd Jones and Josh Nielson
from TGR, and photographers Chris Bezmat, and Flip McCririck. A full day
left us tired, stoked and ready for more. When the snow is stable,
deep, and the weather is nice its time to ride.
Photo 1:First thing in the morning we spotted this zone, our process is
usally to post up at the bottom of the run or on a apposing angle so we
can scope the zone and decide on what lines we want to ride. The
digital camera is a critical tool in this process, with this info on
hand we cross refernce our lines, hazards, and islands of safety once
we are on the top.
photo 2:This is the view from the top. Its always nice when you can look
right down the line like this, you can see most of the run aside from
the exit so now we use the camera to double check the route out the
bottom that will best avoid the shrunds (cracks in the glacier below).

North Cascade Heli continues to deliver!
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Sunday, February 17, 2008
We have been having a blast here in Mazama WA riding at north cascade
helli. Seth, Kye and I have been sessioning for a week now and it has
been super fun. We have hit a few coolies, some spines, tons of
pillows, trees, and good pow. Super stoked on the terrain here and even
though its been dumping, and stormy we have flown every day
and filmed a ton.
Seeing the terrain in the sun the last few days has been a eye opener. Blue bird skies have blown us away, the mountains here are big, peaks that could be the Alps, or spires from the Dolomites, or spines in Alaska.
the locals are great, mellow vibe here, end of the road, small town, great hospitality. Right up our ally.

North West Helli good times
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Saturday, February 09, 2008
Todd J and I met up in JH and started road trippin with the sleds in tow towards the North West. Our destination, North West Helli skiing in Mazama WA. We linked up with Kye Peterson, and Seth Morrison in Spokane, Seth had already put in a couple of travel days driving from CO and Kye after a full day at the airport made it minus bags. The bags made it and we blasted off making it to base camp at around 1:30 AM. We awoke to fairly socked in skies but got up in the bird to ski a short treed run that delivered some goods.
this morning we had some clearing and finally got to get a glimpse of the amazing mountains around this place.

alien planet
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Friday, May 25, 2007
Often I find myself immersed in landscapes that make me step back and laugh in amazment. This planet has so many mind blowing natural features, be it rock, soil, water, or, what I find myself in most often, snow and ice. Features that look sculpted but are wilder than I could ever dream. Pillars, spines, flanks, pockets, ribs, rocks that form spires, clouds forming like mist around them, so many visuals that seem out of this world.
this year i collected some photos from zones that blew my mind. sometimes it feels like Im exploring on a alien planet, right in our backyard.-s

Alaska is one of the funnest places to ride but...
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Wednesday, May 02, 2007
Alaska is one of the funnest places to ride but there are alot of factors that need to line up to get just a few good days. We have been feeling like we are living in ground hog day here. wake up with the hope of bluebird weather only to find overcast skys over and over. When it finally does pop blue you've still only got one of many factors. The snow pack could be dangerous, or conditions could be bad, but if its safe, and smooth its on!
we have had a fair share of bad days but we had two work out for us. the following photos happend durring those days when everything lined up right. all the days waiting are so worth it, and when you get out it feels like there could be no tommorow.
photos: (in order)

2 code blue, warning system

4 Ian Mac dropin in

The European mountians are massive
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Thursday, April 12, 2007
The trip was setting up to be a stand out session for my year, I was meeting up with Candide in his home town of La Clusaz FR to have a private session on the features in his amazingly designed mega park for 3-4 days. then the two of us would head to chamonix where we were set to helli for 4 days in the swiss alps.
Riding up the lift I got my first glimse of the park, it was expertly carved super features. A tree jib that had been imported by helli, a skate style hole wall ride, ( you could grind over or air though the hole) and several unique gap jumps. farther up revealed the mega ram 144' table, and a massive gap hip.
my first impression was, gulp, this is big!
our first day we had a killer sunset jib session on the hole and gaps. then while guinne pigging the big ram table Candide came up short, bounced to the bottom. he was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a broken back. he had two screws put in his back and is reported to be doing good, with full mobility.
The tragic event was a crushing blow. Candide's hurt, Helli trip's canceled, moral's low. But Matt Herriger and I went to Chamonix anyway, decided that we should try and save the seg. on the final day befor I left we booked a helli, found a guide, had bluebird weather, found ripping powder, some lines, a natural kicker, and alot of relife turning the trip positive in the face of adversity.

lost in Montucky
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Tuesday, April 03, 2007
Last week Brent Benson and I went to Montucky to meet up with Chris Collins, Skogan Sprang, Dylan Hood, and Pete O'Brien. It hadnt snowed in weeks but the montana magic wind buffed the snow nightly while we slept. I tagged in for only a short trip, 4 days all of them the sun popped out and we had a ton of fun. the first day we just crusied around scouting stuff. Then, the next few days we shreded the crazy trees, jumps, and lines. Several times we sleded home in the dark, maximizing the day.

Aurora
By: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | Tuesday, March 06, 2007
Solar winds have been carying cosmic dust in to
Earth's magnetosphere, bringing us some subtle arora's. Watching the
northern lights is such an amazing experience. everytime I see it it
reminds me that our perception of reality is simply that -perception.
-s
-Reality is merely a popular consensus of perception. All things in
the universe are understood as received through the various filters of
human understanding and thus are perceptions of reality. What we
commonly refer to as reality is, in fact, merely an agreed upon
perception.
