Surfing during a snowstorm!
Well, I can add this as a new experience as of this afternoon. The 12'@12secs materialized into some nice head-high surf. Air temp = 4ºc, water temp = 11ºc.
Getting ready to go...
Taken during the drive up and down to see where the best peaks were. This was a sucker-hole. It was snowing right before I took this and then as soon as we got out there it started up again.

Would be cool to see that. Learning to surf in Vancouver island we had many days where it would snow and it was just as cold in the water as out. windsurfing in Northerlies was very painful - we'd actually jump in the water to warm up. looking forward to pictures

Scotland sounds more and more like New England every time you post up. Crazy being in the water and seeing snow.
I remember my first post October fall session ever the day after Thanksgiving at Second Beach, RI. Glassy chest high barrels, and kids building a snowman on the beach.
The cold air almost makes the not quite as frigid water seem warm.

Nice solid well too. Brings back memories of a few snowy sessions on the South Island spots. Treacherous west coast roads + long walk in made for no crowds and good times.

Nice! Looks fun too. We've yet to get snow during sessions so far this year in Maine, but it's coming. I look forward to wading through snowdrifts on the beach to get down to the water! Something simply awesome about that...

While I don't miss that at all, I do know what you mean. And it sure does keep the crowds down.
My only complaint is during the real cold winters, ice chunks cab break off the jetties and float into the line up. I remember that one dude from Porpoise Rocks hitting his head on ice during a duck dive.
I on the other hand did not have that problem. When it gets that cold, I just refuse to duck dive or force myself under water in any manner. Brrrrrrr.

Bumps your core score up about 1,000 points.

Nice post.. thanks for the photos!
I just did a year on the Gulf coast of Florida. I had to move back north because I missed surfing in the snow/winter. In fact, I'm planning a move further north in a few months so that I can surf in cold water more often and ride mountains on a more regular basis. Scotland has some great waves (and not just Thurso)..

Haven't been out in a long time... missed the last weekend when it was all snowy and awesome due to a slammed schedule and then of course visitors show up at the same time. Oh well.

Apparently I missed some all-time Fburgh action (air temps about 2ºc!) while I was scoring good crack in Edinburgh last weekend. There had better be some swell this weekend..........

Not quite snowy...
But a damn hard frost, so I guess this belongs here...
My local beach - east of Edinburgh, on Saturday afternoon
Wasnt too cold - apart from my hands.
Though I think this might be my last surf until spring...
Even managed a ski tour the next day!
Some pics over on Winterhighland
