Where to camp out in SLC?
I'll be moving to SLC here within the week, and plan on camping out of my car till I can find a place. I guess theres always the walmart parking lot, but I was hoping for something a little greener, like an actual campsite, where my doggy could run around a bit. Lack of methheads is also a plus.
Any ideas?

If it weren't for the dog, I actually have an extra bedroom. I can try to talk the complex into it if you're interested.

If our house wasn't going to be completely jam packed in the next 24 hrs I'd offer you and the dog a spot.
Might try millcreek canyon. They let dogs up there.
What are you doing for work once you get into town?

Do they really enforce the leash laws everywhere, even if your pup is well behaved? Thats just craziness.

Worth a shot, if you don't mind.

the dog scene in utah is very unfriendly
i hope you know that you cannot bring your dog up lcc at all. i believe its a $250 fine even if he never gets out of the car. they do have cops watching
also there are a lot of unfriendly dogs in sandy.lots of pit-bull types behind fences.my dog got bitten while he was on leash.

Wow way to be another person that generalizes dogs. Why did you have to mention they were "pit bull type"....dogs that are aggressive are that way cause their owners suck....not because of their breed..
you are one of the reasons cities like Denver have made laws to prevent the ownership of pit bulls. they are mostly very gentle loyal dogs.
I guess its ok to go all "nazi" on a breed because of a few bad dog owners. think we should use showers or ovens?
oh yeah and keep your fucking "leashed" dog away from the fucking fence...hows that?

Maybe he's going all 'pit bull' types because they, along with dobermans seems to be what an awful lot of 'bad' owners seem to like to buy. So it is self feeding, the owner sucks, he buys a dog that has a bad rep because it reinforces his/hers 'bad' image and the dog breed continues to get a bad rap. Don't see to many hell's angel want-a-bees buying Lab's
Also to say that all agressive dogs are that way because of there owners is also bull, some breeds have been bred for aggressiveness, some have not.

I agree and back you up on your arguement that one should not stereotype dogs/dog breeds. However the quoted portion above does not do you or your arguement any service.
I am guessing that you were caught up in your righteous anger towards the "pit bull type" and just threw that in there.
Let me state emphatically though that if your fenced, chained etc dog - I don't care what breed, attacks my dog while I am walking it on a leash, on public property (i.e. sidewalk, street, etc) then I am going to attack you and your dog.
See, just how you get defensive regarding breed discrmination, I get defensive about when my dog is attacked by an irresponsible owners dog.
If you have a dog that attacks other dogs through fences, then you better build a better fence.

just to clarify
my dog and i were jogging down the middle of the street early in the morning with no traffic
the dog that bit my dog was chained to the front porch. there was no fence. he either broke the chain or his collar and attacked my dog.

My bad then...i got the impression that the dog bit your through the fence...
I apologize....there is no acceptable reason for a dog to have that behavior other than a lame owner.

apology accepted .i figured you were having a bad day
i agree that there are many ok pitbulls. if i can see their owner,it makes a big difference.
but there have also been incidents at the sandy dog park. if the owner is mean or stupid, its best to get out of there.
as far as i know,pit-bulls were bred to attack, and i consider them potentially dangerous in a way that i dont worry about golden retrievers.i believe insurance companies would verify that.
this occurred a lot closer to state street than you are. but not much farther north.
i always carry pepper spray now
but this is a bit far from the point.i was just trying to help out leroy.

If a dog attacks you kill the fucker. I used to run a couple miles around this neighborhood and I once had two pits chase after me. When I noticed them I turned around and charged their ass. They stopped and thought twice about it like pussies (even the bravest dogs think twice if you show you are prepared to kick their ass). Had I not noticed them until they were closer I would have either kneed both of them in the rib cage as they leaped towards me breaking all their ribs and collasping their lungs or if they leaped at the same time at me I would have grabbed both of them by their necks with either hand and slammed their skulls against the pavement. Either way I don't see the need to fear dogs. They are pussies when confronted.

There's a campsite up at Jordanelle reservoir that would be dog-friendly. Not really anything in SLC I don't think.

Pretty sure the KOA's in town don't care if you have a dog.
Guardsman pass up big cottonwood is ok with Dog (Once you cross onto the Park City side)

I moved to an RV park in SLC for about a week, while looking for a place to rent in town. This was in 1995 when I was heading to school at the U.
IIRC, the RV park I stayed at was on North Temple -- don't remember what it was called or if it still exists, but it was cheap, they allowed tents, and they had hot showers. All I needed for the time being.
If you're looking for a rental, you might want to camp somewhere that you can clean yourself up and look presentable to any prospective landlords. Looking & smelling like you've been living in your car with a dog for several days may not be the image you want to project.

Only on odd numbered days, FYI.
Damnit, that's not right at all. dfinn is right: "odd" numbered days are "off" leash days. even numbered days are on leash.

You sure about that? I thought they could be up there on all days but they need to be leashed on even days.

Thanks guys, got a couple offers for places to crash, and it sounds like a few suggestions for decent places to camp, so I should be able to figure out something.

I hope 2 things for you..
1. you NEVER meet a trained attack dog.
2. you never encounter a police dog.
neither of the above would be classified as "pussies" when confronted, and likely you're not breaking the "rib cage" of either or slamming either to the ground.
Good luck though...apparently you are the new "dog whisperer".

Thirded. Not that people pay attention, almost all the dogs I ran into on even days are unleashed. I guess I should just start riding my bike there on odd days too.
Pioneer Park! Why didn't I think of that? Hahaha.
